Vitamin B12 belongs to the B-complex family of vitamins. Vitamin
B12 may help with mental disorders, fatigue, debilitated states,
pernicious anemia, insomnia, depression, stress, bursitis and
multiple sclerosis. B12 is absorbed from the intestine. This
absorption is aided by "intrinsic factor", however many factors
affect our ability to absorb B12.
First, our production of intrinsic factor declines markedly with
age, making supplementation almost essential. In addition,
people who have had stomach surgery (weight loss surgery, for
example) have likely lost the ability to absorb B12.
Vegetarians are also highly susceptible to B12 deficiency
because the primary dietary sources of B12 are organ meats.
